Research Narrative:

The overall goal of my research is to inform evidence-based nutritional approaches in infancy that contribute to optimal health and developmental outcomes later in life. I have a particular interest in breastfeeding and human milk. We previously demonstrated important beneficial effects of breastfeeding or human milk intake on cognition at school age in large longitudinal cohorts of full term and very preterm infants. In ongoing research, we are analyzing human milk fed to a cohort of hospitalized very preterm infants, and quantifying the extent to which variation in protein and energy in milk are associated with infant body composition and brain size at term equivalent age. We expect these results to inform new approaches within neonatal intensive care to individualize human milk fortification for preterm infants, with a goal of improving somatic growth and reducing developmental impairments in this high risk population.
