Research Narrative:

Dr. Patel’s research interests target understanding the epidemiology of sleep and sleep disorders and the impact of sleep on health. He has three categories of research in his laboratory:

1. To study the bi-directional relationship of sleep and sleep disorders with metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. This includes understanding the impact of poor sleep on risk of obesity and diabetes as well as the potential for obesity therapies to treat sleep apnea.

2. To study the genetic basis for sleep apnea and the impact of these loci on obesity and diabetes.

3. To study the causes of disparities in sleep and the potential impact of these sleep disparities in mediating cardio-metabolic health disparities.
