| Research Narrative:
Dr. Sesso's primary research is in the epidemiology and prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), especially hypertension. He is particularly interested in the relation of physical activity, obesity, and dietary factors such as antioxidant vitamins, lycopene, strawberries, and flavonoids to CVD and hypertension, as well as the role of novel biomarkers that underlie these associations. He is Co-Director of Hypertension Research in the Division of Preventive Medicine, having led the identification and validation of hypertension as an endpoint in the Women's Health Study (WHS) and Physicians' Health Study (PHS). He has received grants to examine novel biochemical and genetic markers of incident hypertension in the WHS, PHS, and Women’s Health Initiative. He is also Director of Nutrition Research in the Division, with several grants and publications in this area. Dr. Sesso’s most recent grant will allow him to examine the relation between physical activity, diet, and the onset of obesity in the WHS, PHS, and the Harvard Alumni Study. In collaboration with the Division of Cardiology, Dr. Sesso has also recently initiated clinical trials to test the role of lycopene and lutein supplements on the progression of carotid atherosclerosis and changes in coronary biomarkers in individuals with coronary heart disease.
